The energy consumption of an ice rink during the Christmas period is quite acceptable compared to that of households.

Energy consumption of a standard 200 m² ice rink for one month

A standard artificial ice rink typically consumes between 150 and 300 kWh per square meter per year, depending on the type of cooling system, insulation and environmental factors. Let’s assume a consumption of 200 kWh per square meter per year as an estimate for a well-insulated and efficient ice rink.

Energy consumption per month: 40,000 kWh per year : 12 = 3,333 kWh per month

So a 200 m² ice rink consumes about 3,333 kWh of electricity in a month during the Christmas season.

Energy consumption household / month

The average energy consumption of a household varies by season. In the winter period, electricity consumption increases due to the use of heating and lighting. According to estimates, an average family of 4 people uses about 350 kWh, depending on the house and heating technology.

Now we can calculate how many families
have the same energy consumption as the ice rink

One ice rink = 3,333 kWh : 350 kWh per household = 9.5 households

Comparison between consumption/person at an ice rink and in a household:

IJSBAAN: A 200 m2 ice rink for one month can provide skating fun for about 12,000 skaters. This means that the energy consumption/person is the following: 3,333 kWh : 12,000 = 0.27 kWh/person.

HOUSEHOLD: A family of 4 brings the following result: 350 kWh : 4 = 87.5 kWh/person.

Conclusie:

  1. Het energieverbruik van een 200 m² ijsbaan gedurende een maand in de kerstperiode is ongeveer gelijk aan het energieverbruik van 10 huishoudens van elk 4 personen in Vlaanderen of Nederland tijdens een typische wintermaand, inclusief verwarming en elektriciteit.
  2. Het energieverbruik van 10 huishoudens geeft energie aan (10 gezinnen x 4 pers.) 40 personen.
  3. Hetzelfde energieverbruik van de ijsbaan geeft schaatsplezier aan 12.000 personen + activeert de plaatselijke economie + promoveert de gezondheid en activiteit + brengt de mensen samen in een sociale gebeurtenis + etc..
